Q&A: Can one fight for causes that are essentially not majorly beneficial to their personal interests?

Updated: Apr 6

Introduction

Investigating how my cause benefit myself personally. Or how I might personally relate to the changes I am trying to make. Once again, it's strictly an inspection of the most PERSONAL aspects of my efforts. Reflections of the issue on different levels (communal, creative, interpersonal, generational, etc...) can be found in my other posts.

From this, I hope to understand how another person truly believe in this cause, because it seems we are fighting for other beings, and we gain no direct benefits from doing so. But is it really that far removed from our own interests?

Q: Why are you a vegan?

A: Because I believe that animal exploitation is wrong for environmental, moral and efficiency reasons. Therefore, I choose to reject the products of animal-based industries.

Q: Why are you a vegan activist?

A: I am still far from doing enough to consider myself an activist. I am just sharing my thoughts and my projects online to keep a sort of journal of my creative processes. I hope that my blog and my creative works can give people a glance into what I see when I look at the world. In the end, I hope people care, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't.

Q: What would a vegan world bring to you?

A: I'd like to live in a world that is less polluted, more equal, more compassionate and responsible.

Q: Why does a "less polluted" world matter to you?

Q: Why would a "more equal" world matter to you?

Q: Why would a "more compassionate" world matter to you?

Q: Why would a "more responsible" world matter to you?

Q: If your efforts can change the world but not within your lifetime, would it still matter for you to try?

A: Assuming there's no reincarnation or any way for me to experience the positive changes that this movement will bring to me personally, I still think that it matters to try. As I've said, it is impossible for me not to do anything about the current state of the world. I am burdened by guilt, by responsibility, and by the potential of a better world.

Call this a greater good, or a light at the end of the tunnel that I will never reach. That doesn't make this ambition any less personal than those such as having career goals, building a house for my (hypothetical) children, dedicating myself to a religion, or pursuing an artistic journey. If it drives me to wake up and be the best version of myself in life, then it is personally worth-living for. Even if it was just a carrot dangling in front of my donkey nose, it's still worth it. Let alone that this is something that will very much bear fruit, albeit I might not be able to have a bite. If I think back on my life, on my deathbed, relieved and proud that I did what I could, then it personally wouldn't matter if the world has truly changed yet. My world would definitely have changed for the better.
